IPPT!

I think I'm getting a little old.. went for my first IPPT test in a long time this morning.. and my thighs are still quite sore from the 2.4km run! Then again, it could be the lack of a proper warm up. =x Made my way down to Maju FCC early in the morning. Since it was my first IPPT test as a NSmen, it was quite a good experience with the electronic test equipment they have there. Everything is automated and can be done at your own pace. The whole test took a shorter time than i had expected.

Not satisfied with my SBJ at all! 230cm (3 points). I was hoping i could get at least 234cm for 4 points so that I might have a chance in attaining gold. Still, managed to attain a silver. That's $200 cashed in for an hour of a saturday morning.

It's been a busy semester! First semester where i have to read lots of research papers. It's a good lullaby though =x But it's over! and so are the exam! Should be able to do well if my calculations are not wrong. =) Exam results will be out at the end of the month~ Tmr is the start of my internship @ CSIT. Hopefully it will be a fun one.

First reservist period is here! No idea what "Commanders' Training" is. If anyone has any clue, pls let me know.

Oh yes, happy mothers' day to all mums out there!

Okay long overdue:

Resolutions (2009)
* Travel: Overseas to places like china or taiwan. Climb mountains / go 乡下 for a walk. Like hiking or maybe backpacking. The destination does not matter. I've been in SG for way too long. I want to travel.

DONE (i think). Went to Vietnam. Went to msia for scuba diving with huifang.

* Learn to cook: Felt kind of useless during the chalet. I admit I have too good a life. Must learn how to cook more dishes. For now, I can only vaguely remember how to cook simple dishes.

NOT DONE. Well, I know some dishes only.

* Be a better friend: Somehow, i feel that i can do better.

UNKNOWN. Perspective.

* Take control back in my life: Always caring about how others will view me. I'm determined to do whatever i deem i shd do.

UNKNOWN. Perspective.

* Results: yh dun kill me pls. >.< But as a student, i shd strive hard to get the best possible results. I know results are secondary but that's just me.

NEUTRAL. CAP didnt change overall. 3.93->3.95->3.93.

* Marathon: I want to complete at least one. Either the sundown or standard chartered or both. Looking for running partner(s)! Timing is secondary. I just want the company (and the top).

Feeling Tired?

Read this article on MSN Today.. The little details in your life can actually cause you to feel tired. You can read the article here or just carry on reading! It's mainly copy and paste. A little paraphrasing here and there.

- All work, No play: Pushing yourself hard wears you out physically and emotionally.
Remedy: Build in pleasure throughout your day. Eg. Listening to music on the way home, play FB at work, etc.

- Shunning the Sun: Lack of natural lighting puts the body into sleep mode.
Remedy: Expose yourself to light by taking a walk in the sun or just outdoors.

- Barely breathing: Taking shallow breaths (we do that unconsciously) deprives the body of oxygen. Results in low level of oxygen in the blood which makes you feel tired.
Remedy: Breath from your diaphragm; Put your hand over your belly button. As you inhale, focus on making your stomach and chest move.

- Being a Desk Potato or a Sofa Spud: Sitting in one position for long periods of time can sap your energy. The body equates that stillness to going to sleep. Staring at a screen also tend to lead to dry eyes and eyestrain. The brain automatically wants to rest the eye.
Remedy: Get the body moving by taking breaks to the bathroom or just walking around. Look at a distant object to relieve eyestrain.

- Sleep Inconsistency: Having an inconsistent sleeping schedule can lead a hangover effect.
Remedy: Sleep at regular times.

- Mild Dehydration: Not enough water causes your blood volume to decrease which means there isnt enough blood to your brain and your heart has to pump harder.
Remedy: Hydrate yourself regularly. Aim for the recommended 2L of water.

- Bright Lights at Night: Normal levels of indoor lighting can disrupt your body's perception of night and day. Bright lights resets your internal clock making it harder to fall asleep.
Remedy: Dim the lights at night a few hours before you go to sleep.

- The Vitamins-Plus-Coffee Breakfast: As it implies, you take vitamins and coffee for breakfast. Neither are sources of energy. Equally bad or worse, is skipping breakfast. That's why they say the most important meal is breakfast.
Remedy: Ensure your breakfast combines protein and carbohydrates (Like bread and Nutella/peanut butter) for a long steady release of energy.

- Overdoing Exercise: Not recommended to workout (that means strenuous exercise) daily since your body needs rest to recover and repair the muscles.
Remedy: Take a rest on the very next day or do some light exercises if you have the habit of exercising daily.

- Toting Around Extra Pounds: Gaining as little as 5 pounds (about 2.5kg) can cause fatigue. Makes your heart work harder to carry that extra weight.
Remedy: Start losing those extra weight! That means losing what you gained. Nothing more, nothing less.

- Slouching: When joints are not aligned properly, it causes strain on the whole body. Poor posture places excess strain on your back and hips, which can make you feel tired and achy.
Remedy: Good posture.

- Too Much Noise: Noise is stress. You are not able to control it and that puts extra stress on your nervous system. Your body has to work harder to complete tasks because you're actively working to try to ignore the sound.
Remedy: Do whatever you can to negate the noise. (Like putting on ear plugs, asking co-workers to lower down their volume, closing the windows to decrease the noise from the outside world ,etc)

Dayang Dive Trip

Took a bus on fri evening (31/7) to Mersing Jetty. By the time we reached the jetty it was already midnight. The bus trip took about 4hours due to the 45mins stop along the way. Then, we waited very long for the boat ride to Dayang. I totally lost track of time. The boat ride itself was another 3hours i was told. So by the time we reached, it was already sat 4 or 5am. The place though quite small, was really beautiful. The bunks are actually located so near the shore that you can wake up to the crashing of the waves on the shore. It isnt a 5-star kind of thing, but all the basic necessaties were there already (imagine Lakuin Camp of Brunei). So it was really comfortable nonetheless.

At night, besides mingling around with the other divers, there isnt anything else to do.

It was an interesting cultural experience. The roads there are like full of motorcycles! Ratio of motorcycles to other vehicles ir probably 50:1 or more. No, i'm not exaggerating. That's just how it is. Motorcycles are their main mode of transport. Even if it is just across the street, they drive their motorcycles. Be it shopping at the street side or night market, they drive their motorcycles as well.

The local guide told us that Vietnam has 2 乱: 电线乱, 车乱. Vietnam also has some 没: 没有麦当劳，没有肥的人，没有雨伞，没有人走路，没有狗，斑马线没有用. The diet there isnt very fattening. Good place to be at if you want to slim down. Nobody uses umbrella there, only ponchos. Why? Becos their main mode of transport is motorcycles, you can't ride a motorcycle while holding an umbrella when it rains. You can't really see any stray dogs on the street as eating dog meat is legal there. The zebra crossings no use at all, everytime you cross the road, you are making a gamble with your life. The trick to crossing the road there is to never take a step back and avoid the vehicles. The motorcyclists will avoid you.

The language there has 6 拼音 and they use the english alphabets. However, they do not use the alphabets F, J, W and Z. The missing alphabets are replaced by combinations of alphabets. Like F is replaced by PH. The Vietnamese used to use chinese characters prior to the invention of the Vietnamese language. The Vietnamese language was invented by the French.

Next to it was the old colonial post office.

The spring rolls which the local tour guide said was well known. Shop is located in Diamond Plaza, which is also beside the old colonial post office, behind the cathedral. Basically, before you eat, dip it into the fish sauce.

Apparently, they have the habit of using common chopsticks to take the food. Eating was a chore since we do not have the habit. The meals after this, i decided to not use common chopsticks.

After dinner, it was down to watch the water puppets. And we were told that it is rather famous. I've never heard of it though. Very interesting show to watch. It's in vietnamese though, so i have no clue what they were performing about. No subtitles.

Lots of this kind of shops along the roads. This is where the locals take a break after long hours of driving. The hammock is there for them to take a nap.

After a few hours of driving, we finally reached our destination.

Bees! The local product there was the honey. About 2 or 3 small teaspoon of it, some hot water. Add something like chrysanthenum into it and finally the lime juice. The taste is quite... different. It's not hard to drink though.

They even keep a pet python. -.-

A real Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) site.

After a few hours of driving we reached this site which was preserved. It was once a battlefield during the vietnam war.

If I could, I would have bought some of these as souveneir. But I dun think SG customs will allow.

This is how they dug the ventilation for the tunnels. This hole will be covered up but with a pipe connected to the surface.

The smoke from the kitchen is channeled away so as not to give away their positions. The large amount of smoke from the kitchen is managed in a way such that only a little at a time is being released. It's managed so well that it is comparable to the smoke given off when smoking.

Lunch! It's held at this garden where alot of soon-to-wed couples will come to have their wedding photos taken.

When the local guide said that we would have to drive in, i tot it was very deep in. But it was only 5mins walk max.

After which we returned to our hotel. But some of us went to the stalls by the beach to take a look.

It felt like it was going to rain with all the lightning and thunder in the distance. Then my bro asked me to try to take a picture of lightning which is near impossible.

Day 4.

Drove to this white villa where the last emperor stayed.

The first floor housed all the various pottery salvaged from a shipwreck.

The second floor just has the furnitures used at that time. Nothing interesting there except for the fabulous sea view.

Next was the 观音庙

But the main highlight is this. Climb to the top of the hill into the Jesus monument.

After the climb and descent, went to this whale temple. Legend has it that this whale saved people who were in danger at sea. So a temple has been built in its honor.

Then it was back to the hotel for an hour rest before the 3 hour drive back to Ho Chih Minh City. The amusement park which we were told that Cambodian tourists love.

Then it was a stop at this shop for buying local goods.. prices in USD. Feels like 黑店

After that, we went to the night market. The market is mainly catered to female shoppers.

In the vicinity is this shop where in 2000, then US president Bill Clinton patronised this shop. The beef noodle here is said to be good. But I can't eat beef in the presence of my dad. =/ The 红豆冰 there is nice though.

a week!! 5 mid-term tests in a single week. Scary. Got back my test script for PC1221.. barely passed. 25.5 / 50 !! This module has no moderation. GG. Thankfully it holds 9%. I've had worst test results with other modules than this.

MA1101R - Not enough time to complete. Attempted all questions.
CS3223 - Just enough time to complete. Attempted all questions.
CS3231 - Had to redo 2 questions because i read the questions wrongly. Not enough time to complete.
CS3243 - Not enough time to complete.

Anywayz, it's all over. I can turn the knob down a little.. until the assignments are out. Hopefully, it'll be sometime soon if not i will have to juggle between assignment and examination revision.

at holland village's Crystal Jade Xiao Long Bao restaurant! It was damn filling for 2 reasons. One was that I had my dinner prior to going over as they kinda confirmed it quite late and dinner was cooked alrdy.. so had to eat dinner. The second was we overestimated ourselves! haha.. ordered too much food!

Didnt take the pic on the amt of xiao long baos we ordered.. it's free flow. Total we had 8 笼 of 小笼包 (is this correct?). So it's like 10 xiao long baos for each of us.. though it might seem very little.. it's quite alot considering the xtra other food we ordered. Struggled to eat finish!! I'm gonna abstain from xiao long bao for at least 6 months! Not sure how long this buffet thing will last, came down to $27 per pax incl gst and service charge. Poor alan had to take cab home cos we ate till he missed the last train. ha!

O yes, and 3 of us had so much that we had stomachache the next day! >.<

According to the NASA eclipse website, there will be a 80% annular solar eclipse on 26 Jan 09! Yup.. 初一！ It will happen from 5.30pm to 6.00pm. More on it here and here

a grp of guys come together on MSN to discuss something, we tend to drift away from the topic at hand very easily.. Was discussing abt some school issues which might lead complications when graduating. Somehow, we drifted to some NUSSU bash (beauty pageant)... NS.. discrete maths... law... and some crappy jokes about protesting peacefully outside the dean's office... etc.

Term time is approaching! Just another one of those nights when i just cant fall asleep. (Insomnia? maybe. My body is screwed) The moon last night was really nice as it was near the horizon making it look bigger. These were taken at between 0330h and 0400h.

I'm just shooting whatever comes to mind. In no particular order,

Travel: Overseas to places like china or taiwan. Climb mountains / go 乡下 for a walk. Like hiking or maybe backpacking. The destination does not matter. I've been in SG for way too long. I want to travel.

Learn to cook: Felt kind of useless during the chalet. I admit I have too good a life. Must learn how to cook more dishes. For now, I can only vaguely remember how to cook simple dishes.

Be a better friend: Somehow, i feel that i can do better.

Take control back in my life: Always caring about how others will view me. I'm determined to do whatever i deem i shd do.

Results: yh dun kill me pls. >.< But as a student, i shd strive hard to get the best possible results. I know results are secondary but that's just me.

Marathon: I want to complete at least one. Either the sundown or standard chartered or both. Looking for running partner(s)! Timing is secondary. I just want the company (and the top).

Counted down @ ECP. The ships harbored there blew their horns and started shooting off lots of flares! It's has a different feeling compared to fireworks. It's... slow. So you can kind of enjoy it longer. Like little comets in the night sky. =) Managed to see the fireworks that was going on at the marina area. Back home, my aunts and uncles came to our house to countdown as well. Heard from my mum it was quite happening.. Mahjong table and poker table. Typical CNY-like atmosphere. They were able to see fireworks from marina, yishun and jb!

Having a steamboat on xmas eve feels weird. I've always imagined a christmas dinner should include turkey and whatever else that is suitable. Still, it is a great way to celebrate x'mas. Finally met up with my poly peeps, esp bryan since he's in sg for the holidays. It's a little crazy, he's doing his masters in australia and by the time he gets his masters, i'm still in NUS!! =.= As usual, the attendance wasnt very spectacular.. only 5 of us including myself.

the speed camera - love is like the speed camera. If u dunno that it exists there, once you pass it and the spark (flash) is over, it's too late for regrets. Same with love, you have to take action before it's too late.

the traffic light - love is like the traffic light. Red, amber and green light. The transition from green to red is just that momentarily amber light. If the traffic light keeps getting stuck at amber light, the traffic is screwed. Vehicles are unable to determine to continue going forward or stopping. So one must be determined and take action immediately and not keep hesitating (amber light). It causes both parties to be confused.

Above are inspirations from somebody. ~~I think it's pretty much easy to guess who that 'somebody' is.~~ The words aren't exactly like that, but the idea roughly there.

.. a free man now. Exams are officially over and the holidays have officially started. The last paper paled in comparison to past year exam questions. It was a rather easy paper although it had 9 questions which can stump anyone at first. The past year exam papers had 6-8 questions and the questions were really difficult and time consuming. But, it ain't over till the fat lady sings. Only when the results are released then i can truly celebrate. Provided the results are ideal.

*EDIT: Resumed my galactic conquest in SPORE. The game was last saved on 8 Oct 2008. Which means I have not been playing anything REAL games since that date. OMG. This sem, i feel exceptionally hardworking.

did i decide to create a facebook account.. yes i realise that it's considered slow but heck. Went to my OCS buddy's house on monday for his house-warming. During the chats and laughters, i realised that many of them used facebook as a means to keep in contact and know of happenings of one another automatically.. Since we do not meet up so often, i though it would appropriate to create one. This is the main reason, there's a host of other reasons as well.

On a side note, from gombak to punggol costs $2.40 by train!! WTF?! And that's just the one-way journey. =_= It's a money-sucking world out there. Scary.

All of a sudden, 24hours doesnt seem to be enough. Preparation for the mid-term tests are still on-going. 2 more tests to go and assignments have yet to be completed (still got 1 month to deadline though) and more are on the way. Got back one of my module's test result already, it wasnt bad, but it wasnt ideal either. The assignment for that module marks were also published. Did not expect to fail. 2.5/10. Seriously i must have misunderstood or made a blunder on the assignment somewhere. This is damn ouch. Makes me below average by one grade for this module. The only way to make up for this is another assignment (i think) and the final exam. This sem is turning out less than ideal.. guess that means less SPORE for me. =(

There was an error during the marking of the assignment (it's automated testing). So I managed to get full marks for the program! Yay, it's currently 6.5/10 now.

I died on the probability test. It was rather simple really but somehow during the test, i made careless mistakes that cost me alot. This module has a high chance of either failing or a marginal pass which either way will pull my overall CAP down.

Received a letter from NSPC [National Service Personnel Centre] yesterday. To inform me that with effect from 1 Dec 08, all under the Holding List will be required to take their annual IPPT "in order to maintain the fitness level required of OPS Readiness". Good news is that every year I get money from the govt (provided I can still maintain my current fitness level). Bad news is the trouble of booking and going all the way to maju camp to take the darn ippt. Still, the window opens on my next birthday which is about 11 more months. =)

Term break is just round the corner.. and I have... 1 assignment due for that week which i'm quite lost on how to start.. Hope I can clear my essay assignments during that period so that i can free up time for assignments that come after the break. Still, i have to revise for mid-term tests that are just after the term break.. and this is literally a 'break'. You are pushed to your breaking point as that is the only week whereby u can clear all the backlogs for this first half of the semester. !!

On a lighter note, I went to chi gardens last wednesday to view the displays up for the Mid Autumn Festival. It's so... 'kiddy' (and kitty). I have never been a fan of Hello Kitty. Still, qian's little 4yr old cousin, weiwei, was damn cute lar! So innocent.. those were the days when we had carefree lives. =/

New Semester, Old headaches

Classes and tutorials are all settled at last. Was worried for a while that I might not enough modules for this semester as things weren't going according to plan. I'm taking a few modules earlier than anticipated as the modules I'm interested in are not offered this semester. School has started for a couple of weeks already, and this sem seems to be tough as it's all made up of higher level modules. (Lv3000 computing modules and a lv2000 maths module [probability]). I already died for MA1505 (lv1000 maths module). I'm not sure if I can survive the probability module. Attempted the tutorial questions and I'm pretty lost already. And we are only at introduction chapter. ~_~

The only module i think i can slack in is the General Education Module.. which happens to be "Understanding the Universe". Seems simple as some of the stuffs i'm hearing in lectures are already known to me. It's non-examinable so less stress on that and i can concentrate more on the other 4 modules. From this semester onwards, it's all lv3000 n above computing modules.

Applied for IDA's ELITe programme and was successful. But this might mean graduating a lil' later. No strings attached though and most of my friends are in the programme.. well i guess i'll just take it a step at a time.

My WSM (Wing Sergent Major) has just passed away recently.. Went for his wake at yishun. Saw him in the coffin.. almost couldnt recognise him at all. Could see how disease has taken its toll on him. Despite the short notice, most of us turned up for the wake. We paid our respects and talked about him. About how he always tried to cover up for our mistakes. He only punished us when he had no choice (pressure from the above). He was a great WSM, always looking out for us. Come to think of it, most of us last saw him during our commissioning parade. In fact, I had totally forgot his name until my friend told me that it was our WSM in the message.

His last words to us after we commissioned: 成败聚散，自定古理。(Your success or failure is all up to you). Good bye 1WO Tan Tai Khoon.

Chek Jawa

Our tour de wild singapore concludes with a trip to chek jawa on pulau ubin! Nothing much there compared to the previous 2 trail hikes we had (McRitchie and S.Buloh). The best thing there is the sea breeze. Very windy and cooling =) It has a sweet view of changi and nearby tekong and can be good setting for a picnic i guess. Chek Jawa is only a 40 minute walk from the jetty. We took longer than that because my other friends were too busy trying to locate durian trees and hoping to find a few durians that have fallen to the ground. The myth about durians only falling at night is definitely busted. Will upload some pics and probably some videos soon.

Dunno what hit us, but myself and a few of my NS friends decided to walk the trail which starts from MacRitchie resevoir and ended at bt timah. I guess we stayed in the office for too long during our ns days and wanted to relive the outfield days. INFANTRY~

According to the signboards, it was about 10+km in total and we took about 4hrs to finish walking it. Took some pics along the way as well. It's tiring but i think it was quite refreshing to just hike once in a while.

Played paintball today to celebrate yixuan's belated bday. it was fun. Definitely much better compared to the one at singapore discovery center. We had to shoot down 2 small targets before we can grab this ammo box in the middle of nowhere and start running like hell.(Last we went to SDC, we had to shoot a balloon.) My team was good~~ All-star team. Myself, hy, clemen and yuhui. We have the most field experience so i guess that helps.

O yes, the pain is also much more compared to SDC too. But what do i know? Clean sheet! nv got shot at! =p

It has been 2 weeks since i passed my driving test. Took the car out for a couple of drives already. The only thing that prevents me from driving often is parking. =.= My parking skills suck big time. Gonna need lotsa practice. zzz

1 week of term break is over and i did not touch a single module to revise. All of a sudden, this week seems damn pack with tutorials' homework and mid term tests coming up. Need to study, do lab assignment and the tutorial questions. GG!

A star falls, the chase begins.

Just watched it with chongz, jeff, clemen, wx and ym at jp a few hours ago.
About this movie: comedy, romance, magic, adventure.
Damn nice! The storyline is fantastic. Personally, if you're looking for a movie to catch, this movie is well worth it. It's about 130mins which is about after 2 hours.

Tomorrow is another maths test (actually about 9 more hours). 5 questions. 1 on trigo, 2 on differentiation and another 2 on integration. Wish me luck!

Literally break us apart during this supposed term 'break'. Been going to school for the entire week and staying till late in the evening. Worse off compared to term time. =.=

It seems that all the lecturers assume that we have the entire term break dedicated to them only. Many assignments, reports and self study to do during this week. Truckload of studies to do for the up coming Mid-term CA tests.

When can i take a breather? Probably after my final exams for this sem.

So far... school has been great. No tutorial lessons yet. They start from next week onwards. Maths is scary when you have to recap whatever you learned in sec sch in about 2 lectures (that's 4 hours). Also, programming will kick in too. Will have to recap what I've learned during poly as well. Their lectures is based on the assumption that you are already good in the pre-requisites. So they won't teach what you've forgotten. Will have to make the effort to read up on your own.

Though quite sucky, but it is really a very efficient way of learning. Haiz... 1st sem only. Grr... Hopefully, when memory kicks in, everything will be smooth going.

Btw, looking for this song.. if anyone hav.. pls tell me. =) It's from the movie '881'. (No, I've not watched it.) But from what I've been reading, seems like not a bad show.

Posting Notice!

Saw a letter on my desk when i returned home from work today.. Opened it.. And it was a posting notice for my remaining NS liability period. It is.... THE HOLDING LIST. =)

If I'm not wrong, the holding list is like a reserve pool. So basically it means (or at least i choose to believe) that i do not need to serve ICT (In-Camp Trainings) unless summoned. But, there is still that darn annual IPPT.. hai..

FYI,
I'm currently on a 2 week stint at this law firm doing data entry and filing for them. No Internet access (sian).. but the amount of paperwork that needs to be done is already enough to keep me occupied. People there are v friendly. The working environment there isnt too bad. Just that it is awfully quiet except for the occasional gossiping sessions and telephone calls.

Tomorrow need to go school for QET (Qualifying ~~Engrish~~ English Test). Die liao la.. When was the last english paper I took? O' Levels. And the language used for the last two years.. erm... isn't very helpful for this test. HAHA

A trip to nowhere

Seems alot of my friends are going overseas soon, already on overseas or already came back from their overseas trip.

What's up? Come to think of it.. been a long time since i last went overseas. The last time i went was Taiwan. And it was for a military exercise! (Had fun though now to think about it..) So if to exclude that.. the last trip was to Seoul. And that was almost 3 years ago? o.O

Hopefully.. if the opportunity presents itself, an overseas internship during University might be enticing. =)

If you've been watching television the past several weeks, you would see the advertisement on the game Granado Espada. Yup.. that's what I've been playing since ORD. The game is cool. Nice graphics and environments.

ORD: Operationally Ready Date

In case you do not know what does ORD stands for. It used to be ROD which stands for Run Out Date. I guess ORD is more style.

Anywayz, went back to camp today to collect my IC. Wasn't very estatic or anything. Just glad thats all. Another chapter in life closes. And another will begin when my university classes begins. =)

All in all, it has been a postive experience for my these past 2 years.
